One People One Heart: Israel on Fifth 2024

This year’s parade took place under sunny skies but was subdued in a way out of respect for the ongoing situation in Israel. Security was tighter than usual but the joy of celebrating and supporting the Jewish state didn’t falter. Over 40,000 people came out to express their solidarity.

Among the thousands walking down Fifth Avenue were representatives of the Israeli government and local officials. Most notable, are relatives of fallen Israeli soldiers and of those hostages still in Hamas captivity. Posters and banners calling for the freedom of the hostages were everywhere, and the song “Bring Them Home Now” was heard throughout the parade.

In a nod to the more solemn aspect of the parade there were no marching bands this year but floats with music and schools with dancers livened up the parade route and motivated the marchers with their lively rhythm.

The Jewish Federation of Northeastern Pennsylvania proudly participated with a group from Scranton and the Poconos. Members took turns carrying our new banner which highlights the names of all our community partners. Our group proudly displayed  “friendship flags”, combining the flags of Israel and the US.  Many spectators commented on the “cool” flag and where they might get it.

After the walk, the Federation bus repeated our tradition of stopping in Teaneck, N.J. for a kosher lunch.

On behalf of our group, we would like to thank Dr. Chejfec and the Federation for sponsoring this annual event, and Dassy Ganz for organizing it. We look forward to next year’s parade, hopefully in peaceful times.
