Mark Silverberg Retirement Speech

I look around this auditorium today and I see so many of my friends from Greater Scranton, Stroudsburg, Lords Valley, Pocono Pines, and Honesdale who are here this afternoon and I am so grateful to each of you for coming.

As I have said for the past two decades, “We are more than just 17 affiliated agencies that comprise the Jewish Federation of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

WE ARE FAMILY in the truest sense of the word.

So, what exactly does that mean?

It means that when we have a successful Campaign (as we did last year – thank G-d), our role is to share the wealth (so the speak) with our family as fairly and as equitably as possible.

And it means that when times get difficult, we are there to assist members of our family whose agencies are suffering financial hardship (as has been the case during this terrible pandemic) and we are there to provide them with funds to the extent of our ability to do so and to secure the safety of our Hebrew schools and institutions with security grants given the rise of anti-Semitic vandalism against Jewish institutions across our nation.

And why do we do this?

Because that’s what FAMILY is all about.

I want to thank each and every one of you for having given me the honor of serving as Executive Director of our wonderful Federation family for the past two decades.

If I have seen further than most – as the expression goes – it’s because I’ve stood on the shoulders of giants like you.

And one more very important comment. I am deeply indebted to my staff who has been by my side for so many years. That includes my gifted assistant director, Dassy Ganz, my secretary, Mary Ann Mistysyn, our new office manager, Marion Olivetti, and Dolores Gruber, our office manager for over 30 years.

I am especially grateful to Dolores – whose extensive knowledge of accounting practices and whose oversight of all our financial matters have benefitted our Federation family for over three decades and who has recently announced her retirement as well.

As a gift, it is my honor to present her with a beautiful gold watch inscribed with her initials on the back. It’s simply our way of saying thank you for your many years of devoted service to our Federation.

May G-d bless each and every one of you. Stay safe, stay well, and thank you all for being part of our Federation family.
