Representatives from local Jewish non-public schools joined hundreds of other advocates on May 7, 2019, at the annual EITC/OSTC Advocacy Day in Harrisburg sponsored in part by the Orthodox Union’s Teach PA coalition. The purpose of the event was to thank Commonwealth legislators for their ongoing support of this tuition assistance program for non-public schools and to ask them to continue to press for increased funding for this initiative as well as for school security.
The group of parents, educators, community leaders, and students met with various legislative leaders as well as other members of the Teach PA group in the magnificent Capitol building. A mass rally of all the non-public schools, Jewish and gentile, was held at noon on the steps of the building. The chant of “What do we want?” “Choice!” “When do we want it?” “Now!” was the refrain between speakers. Catered kosher boxed lunches were served to students and chaperones outside while the other representatives of the various Jewish schools had a catered kosher buffet in a conference room where they were addressed by coalition leaders.
Finally, there was a rally on security for non-public schools in the Capitol rotunda.
The Scranton group thanks Mr. Mark Silverberg and the Jewish Federation of Northeastern Pennsylvania for sponsoring the comfortable charter bus for the day trip.
